From Theory to Practice : A Mini Hackson Model for Bioindustry Learning

This project introduces a mini hackathon-based teaching model in the new course Introduction to Bioindustries, designed to bridge the gap between academic training and real-world applications in the life sciences. By integrating industry case studies, video content, and team-based challenges, the course enhances student engagement, practical problem-solving, and career preparedness. An instructional assistant will support the creation of learning materials and facilitate active learning through in-class discussions.

The project aims to (1) address the mismatch between academic content and industry needs, (2) develop students’ critical thinking and communication skills, (3) foster entrepreneurial and collaborative mindsets through real-world challenges, and (4) produce a sustainable set of learning resources including curated case studies and bioindustry videos. These materials will be used in future offerings and may be adapted for other courses. The initiative promotes active learning and industry engagement, preparing students for evolving careers in biotechnology and life sciences.
