Department: Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)
Project Start Year: 2025/26
Description:

This project proposes the development of OO-CoBE, a lightweight and flexible Onsite-Online Computer-Based Examination platform designed to address the challenges of large-scale assessment in programming courses. Leveraging web-based technologies and AI-assisted grading, OO-CoBE allows students to complete digital exams on-site while enabling automated grading and real-time monitoring. The system aims to reduce manual grading workloads, ensure grading consistency, support academic integrity, and improve students’ exam experiences. It also accommodates diverse needs, including those of SEN students.

Project objectives include:
(1) providing a scalable, secure platform for digital assessment;
(2) supporting simultaneous exams for large student cohorts;
(3) enabling AI-assisted grading of coding and essay questions
(4) improving grading efficiency and accuracy;
(5) offering detailed grade analysis and personalized reports; and
(6) reducing student appeals and enhancing satisfaction.

OO-CoBE will be piloted in 14 programming courses, with the potential for broader adoption across HKUST and beyond.
